Heavy Hitters - Major Auction House Results from October

October was a dead month for auctions among the big auction houses, as not a single one I follow had a significant auction in the month. There was one Cubs item of note at a smaller auction house that made some news.

Sammy Sosa Corked Bat
Schulte Auctions had the barrel of Sammy Sosa's corked bat that he was caught using and suspended for in June 2003 up for auction on Halloween night. The source of the bat barrel was Mike Remlinger, a member of the Cubs at the time who apparently picked up the barrel in the clubhouse after the game and has had it ever since. The bat failed to meet the reserve at auction, but was sold a day or two later for the high bid of $14,407 (plus commission). Grant DePorter, the CEO of Harry Caray's restaurant in Chicago, was the high bidder and the buyer. He says he plans to display the piece at Harry Caray's restaurant in the near future and then donate it to the Chicago Sports Museum at some point.
