The only real show stopper from a Cubs standpoint at any of the auction houses last month was the Dizzy Dean jersey. But still a lot of other nice stuff that any Cubs collector would love to own. This report covers Lelands from July 9th, Hunt Auctions from July 13th, Huggins & Scott from July 28-29, and Goodwin & Co. from July 29th.
Rogers Hornsby Magazine Photo Cut w/Auto - Huggins & Scott Lot #500 – $499.37
This is a great Hornsby auto on a magazine page picturing him as a member of the Cubs. Given how nice and bold the auto is, the only thing holding this back from being a truly great piece is the fact that the picture itself is not in great shape with notable creases in it like it was folded into thirds and then put in a wallet (the pic here doesn't show this that well). Still an excellent piece.
Kiki Cuyler 1929 Magazine Photo Auto - Hunt Lot #224 - $1,265.00
The price on this one is a testament to how tough of an auto Cuyler is, because the autograph itself is not the greatest with noticeable fading on his name. Still a nice piece given the good photo.
Grover Cleveland Alexander Autographed Baseball - Lelands Lot #746 - $1,993.21
Charlie Root Autographed Baseball - Hunt Lot #262 - $345.00
4 Different Cubs team Autographed Balls (1960, 1968, 1989, 1998) - Huggins & Scott Lot #489 - $411.25
Game Used Memorabilia
1938 Dizzy Dean Game Used Jersey - Lelands Lot #2 - $37,504.23
This is a really stunning jersey from a condition standpoint and the ending price reflects that. This is one of the best pre-war Cubs jerseys in existence.
1989 Jerome Walton Autographed Game Used Jersey - Huggins & Scott Lot #771 - $940.00
Nice jersey from Walton's rookie of the year season. The seller has to be happy with the price, I would have guessed $500-600.
1957 Cal Neeman Game Used Jersey - Lelands Lot #178 - $1,590.55
1960s era Cubs model hat (use unknown) - Hunt Lot #519 - $115.00
1965-69 Ernie Banks Game Used Bat - Lelands Lot #176 - $3,750.41
1986 Rick Sutcliffe Game Used Jersey - Hunt Lot #126 - $460.00
1986 Ryne Sandberg All Star Game Bat (Not Used) - Hunt Lot #155 - $517.50
1988 Billy Williams Coaches Jersey - Hunt Lot #110 - #345.00
1987-89 Ryne Sandberg Autographed Game Used Bat - Hunt Lot #161 - $690.00
2004 Sammy Sosa Game Used Glove - Lelands Lot #242 - $528.50
1888 E-223 G&B Chewing Gum Silver Flint SGC 10 - Goodwin & Co. Lot #27 – 3,575.53
In all of the shows I’ve been including several Nationals and a lot of big regional shows, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a card from this set in person. This set was the first set ever to be marketed with candy or gum, a prelude to what the future would hold.
1909-10 E-97 Briggs & Co. Harry Steinfeldt B&W Proof SGC 30 - Goodwin & Co. Lot #28 - $853.05
1909 E-95 Philadelphia Caramel Frank Change SGC 84 (highest ever graded) - Goodwin & Co. Lot #46 - $3,933.90
1967 Pizza Pros B&W Ernie Banks - Huggins & Scott Lot #294 - $188.00
1970 Dunkin Donuts Chicago Cubs Bumper Sticker Set (6) - Huggins & Scott Lot #620 - $152.75
1904 Sporting Boiler Magazine Premium Chicago Cubs Team Photo - Huggins & Scott Lot #396 - $381.88
This is a great team photo from the early part of the 20th century. The picture shows Frank Chance, Joe Tinker, Three Finger Brown, Johnny Kling, and others. Seems like a pretty cheap price for what looks like a really nice piece.
1909 Cubs vs. White Sox Program - Huggins & Scott Lot #302 - $470.00
I just wrote a piece about programs a few days back (around the time this one was ending, wonder what brought the programs to mind, eh?), and I talked about how rare early 1900’s programs are. This is a nice example of a pamphlet size program that opens up into a scorecard.
